Menopause

September 7, 2017

I have been asked a few times recently regarding menopause and Holistic Therapies, is it any good? What benefits could it have?

Menopause is a natural process which all women go through, often called 'the change' or 'that time of life', its a time where your body, emotional and physical aspects go through huge hormonal changes as your body begins to stop ovulating. It usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55. However it can start earlier through due to medical issues.

During a woman’s fertile years, the ability to produce an egg each month is associated with the release the reproductive hormone known as oestrogen. As women get older less oestrogen is produced, causing the body to behave differently. However the body does not stop producing oestrogen overnight, and the process can even take several years, this slow change is called the ‘peri-menopause’.

For some women the loss of the possibility of pregnancy can be very upsetting. These changes in hormones can also lead to symptoms such as but not limited to hot flushes, night sweats, waking up with your sheets drenched, irregular periods, insomnia, anxiety, vaginal dryness, memory loss, irritability and irregular heartbeat.

So what can be done to allievate the symptoms, well diet is always worth looking at as bone density can become an issue, taking supplements  can also help. Exercise, keeping moving, exercise releases endorphins which help with mood and anxiety and helps keep your bones strong. Holistic Therapies can also help, reflexology , targeting areas specific areas such as adrenals, pituitary, thyroid area, kidney, brain.  Swedish body massage, will also help move circulation and provide relaxation. Aromatherapy, some oils can help with balancing the hormones along with with the theraputic quality of the massage its self and Reiki a gentle spiritual healing , all of these therapies have and can help to restore balance to hormones and moderate the symptoms which in turn helps with the client to live with menopause.

Its also worth finding out as much as you can and talking to others in a similar situation. Support can be half the battle, know your feelings are normal and although things can feel bad, you will get through it.
